Offal or organ meats were a primary part of our ancestor’s diets and provided a huge nutritional benefit to groups of people who had limited access to other nutrient dense foods. Here are some organ meats that has great nutrients and you may benefit from if you include in your diet. These should all be from organic, grass-fed or pasture-raised animals and not ever from industrial farm raised animals. The diets, veterinary drugs and living conditions of such animals are not likely to result in healthy organs, so be sure to check where the organs came from, should you decide to pick some up at your local supermarket or your favourite butcher.
Tongue - this is actually more of a muscle than an organ but it does contain a high percentage of calories from fat. Tongue is one of the most tender cuts of beef as it has about 70 percent fatty acids. A lot of people really enjoy the flavour of tongue more than ground beef and steaks. It can be used in a variety of different recipes and is also very easy to prepare.
Heart - heart doesn't look very edible but most are quite surprised to know that it actually tastes good! Many have compared its taste and texture to that of steak or brisket. Liver - is by far the most nutrient dense organ meat to consume. Especially liver (from healthy sources) can be an important part of a pregnancy diet due to its high folate content. While organ meats do function as filters in the body, they don’t store the toxins. Just make sure that the animal you're getting the organ meats from was grass-fed, raised on pasture and (if possible) not given grains or antibiotics.
